Hounds used for draghunts are foxhounds, beagles, french stag hounds, bloodhounds, black and tans, and German "Bracken". Every breed has its advantages and disadvantages. Most importantly for the drag hound is his nose, i.e. his ability to smell the scent of the line and the passion to hunt the drag. Another important criterion is the "full cry" of the pack which is the characteristic barking of the hounds as long as they are on the line. After all, the hounds of a pack should go at an equal pace. Most packs use a more or less intense smelling artificial scent, allowing the hounds to travel fast across country. As puppies the hounds are trained to recognize their scent. Furthermore, they are made familiar to smells they might encounter during a hunt (e.g. wild, strange hounds) so that these smells are not associated with a quarry by the hounds.
