Sanct Hubert is like Eustachius patron
of the hunters and forest rangers. His feast is the 3rd of November. His
name means: through intellect shining (old German).
In the legend of St. Hubert the vision
of the holy Eustachius is flowed into.
Hubert lived at the court of Theoderich
III. in Paris and went later to Metz. After the death of his wife during
the birth of his first son, he stretched of all offices and lived for
seven years as a hermit in the Ardennes and nourished himself through the
hunt. In this time, his belief consolidated and he let himself ordain to a
priest. He was regarded for his circumspect and indulgence. During a
famine he rescued thousands of persons before death.
The legend of the hunter hubertus was
only told first in the 15th century. A magnificent stag with a crucifix
between the antlers appeared him what converted him. This situation is,
like already mentioned, derived from of the Eustachius / Placidus-legend.
The base for the attribution of this situation to Hubert was probable his
time as a hermit.
Huberts body was solemnly raised on
November 3rd 743 in St. Peter in Liège. Such an act was the usual form of
a canonization into the 10th century. 825 the relics were transported into
the Abbey of Andagium in the Ardennes which is since called St.
Hubert's.
At the time around St. Hubert's day the
traditional masses and hunts take place. Hubert is counted to the holy
marshals, in some areas also to the holy helpers. His attribute is the
(white) stag with a (illuminating) crucifix between the
antlers.
